WHY HIM?

The Yankees have announced that they will retire Joe Torre's #6 this summer. I don't get this. Granted he had a hot streak from 1996 through 2007, but it didn't end on a very high note. First, he was "insulted" because the Yankees only wanted to pay him #5 million  to manage one more year, plus bonuses. He didn't like the bonus plan. Then he proceeded to write a book, trashing some of the players. Very high class, Joe.

This would be the 18th number the Yankees have retired, but only the second manager, the other one being Casey Stengel ("You could look it up."). Both managed for 12 years and both won pennants 10 times. But Casey won seven World Series and Torre won four.

It's interesting that Joe McCarthy managed for 16 years, won 8 pennants and 7 World Series, yet he hasn't been honored with any ceremony. Lets honor Torre by letting him share Joe McCarthy's number They can't retire McCarthy's number because he never wore one.
